SIGMA GAMMA RHO SORORITY, INC.

Delta Omicron Sigma, Columbus Alumnae Chapter FEBRUARY 2011 POODLE POST

CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH!!

SOROR HATTIE MCDANIEL

Hattie McDaniel is best remembered today for her role in the

film"Gone With The Wind". She won the 1939 Academy

Award for bestsupporting actress for her portrayal of

Mammy. She was the first African-American to be

nominated for, and to win, an Academy Award.

Hattie got her start in show business with her

family's travelingBaptist tent show. As a teenager

Hattie performed in the touringvaudeville outfit the

Spikes Brothers Comedy Stars on the West Coast.

In the early 1920s she was singing with George

Morrison's Orchestra inDenver and toured the

Pantages and Orpheum vaudeville circuit with them.

She made her recording debut in 1926, but never had

much of a recording career, but she was a popular live

act. As the Blues craze died out in the late 1920s, Hattie

started appearing in theatrical productions. She was in

the touringcompany of "Showboat" from 1929 to 1930.

In the early 1930s she settled in Hollywood and began

her career as a film actress. She was almost always cast

as a maid, cook, nanny or servant of some sort, these

being the only types of available for African-Americans

at the time. She appeared in over seventy movies during

the 1930s. After winning the Academy Award in 1940 she

continued to be cast as the maid for the rest of her life.

She famously quipped "I'd rather make $700 a week

playing a maid than earn $7 a day being a maid." Despite

the poor quality of her roles Hattie continued to open doors

that had previously been closed to African-American

performers. In 1947, she starred on radio in "The Beulah

Show". In 1951, the show moved to television, and Hattie

starred in the first three episodes until she discovered she

had cancer and became too ill to continue working. She died

of breast cancer in 1952.

              RHOER CLUB HIGHLIGHTS!!

A love for youth and the development of their full potential was the primary motivating factor that inspired Founder Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little to organize Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Young people today face challenges that could never have been imagined years ago, but such challenges provided the sorority with opportunities to carry on the vision of Little.

The Rhoer Club is the youth group affiliate of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Founded in 1939 at the 14th Biennial Boule, the first Rhoer Club was formed in 1940 by Alpha Eta Chapter. This group was organized to encourage high scholastic attainment and the development of leadership skills. Clubs are compromised of young women between the ages of twelve and eighteen.

Rhoers are young girls organized on a local, regional and national level. The Rhoer affiliates are working to help other young people while they learn about their heritage and develop leadership skills. Sigma Gamma Rho is dedicated to helping Rhoers to grow to be women of substance dedicated to service.

Rhoer Clubs are sponsored by graduate chapters of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. on a local level and are recognized nationa
lly as well. These young ladies also assist the Sorority with community service activities and social projects.

For the past few months, several Delta Omicron Sigma Alumni Chapter Sorors have committed to live healthy lifestyles. A healthy lifestyle is more than food, it’s the ability to manage your habits, energy level, exercise, sleep and organizational control. Sorors have committed to live healthy lifestyles not only by themselves, but also with other Sorors, family, and friends!

              Soror Edwards-Keaton’s Testimony:

I began my journey of health and wellness after a Health Fair at my church where I was categorized as "obese". I was determined to get to a healthy range despite my comfort with the way I looked. I realized that it is NOT just about being happy in your own skin but also healthy! That's why I took this challenge seriously, joined Body Image Fitness Boot Camp and have since lost 32 LBS to date. I not only look great, I FEEL great!
