November/December 2012 Edition

Happy 90th Anniversary
Delta Omicron Sigma Columbus Alumnae chapter along with Iota Nu Sigma Alumnae chapter celebrated the sorority's 90th anniversary with a luncheon that was held on November 10, 2012 at the Boat House at Confluence Park. Over 200 sorors, fellow greeks and family and friends came for fellowship and honoring of the 7 women who founded this illustrious sorority. Luncheon participants were treated to a monologue by soror TaTiana Sanders and a praise dance by the Wings of Praise Dance Ministry from Flintridge  church. International Grand Epistoleus, Soror Tiffany Hightower was the keynote speaker for the event. During the luncheon a fundraising effort for March of Dimes also took place which netted $525.00 for the organization. As with this years theme of " Uplifting Our Legacy of Sisterhood, Leadership and Service", Delta Omicron Sigma continue to strive for "Greater Service, Greater Progress" in the Columbus metro area.

Sigma Style: 3 Ways to De-Stress Over the Holidays

3 Ways to De-Stress During the Holidays
1. Meditation. Who knew that holiday zen took just a few quiet breaths? Meditation is a powerful de-stressing tool any time of year, but when you're rushed during the holidays it can be the perfect way to center and relax. And the best part? You can do it anywhere. Even if you're standing in line waiting to mail holiday gifts at the post office, you can do it! All you have to do is take a few deep, slow breaths, focusing completely on your inhale and exhale. Yep, that's meditation!

 2. Sip green tea. Researchers have found that regularly drinking green tea can help to beat stress and improve psychological well being. So this holiday season, skip the coffee and drink the green stuff!

3. Say "no." Most of us get stressed during the holidays because we're overscheduled and feel obligated to do things when we really don't feel like it (or have the time). So this year, make a commitment to do less and prioritize your time for only the events that are the most important to you. Do this, and you'll kick holiday stress to the curb.

Do you stress out over the holidays? How do you deal? Any holiday meditations you like to do? Share!

KOMAN RACE FOR THE CURE 2011

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. Since its inception in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure® series has grown from one local Race with 800 participants to a global series of more than 120 Races with more than 1 million people expected to participate in 2009.

The Komen Race for the Cure® is a unique event, designed and implemented to promote positive awareness, education and early detection of breast cancer. It has proved to be an enormously effective way to reach many women and men with the message that breast cancer is not necessarily fatal if mammography and breast self-exam become routine. As well as being a road race for runners, the Komen Race for the Cure® is an emotionally charged event that attracts many first timers and recreational runners. It is is an opportunity for thousands of women, men and their families, running or walking, to spread the breast cancer message within their communities.

Up to 75 percent of the funds raised at the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure® remain here in our 30-county service area to provide breast health research, diagnostics, screening, treatment, services and education for uninsured or underinsured women. The remaining 25 percent goes to fund national research to discover the causes of breast cancer and, ultimately, its cures.

Why we need your support:

Every step counts! Your donation provides women and men in Columbus and our 30-county area with services that have literally saved lives. You help make the following programs possible:
  • Free mammograms and diagnostics
  • Medical treatment for qualified breast cancer patients who cannot afford care, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation
  • Support services including support groups, assistance with finding financial resources, prescription refills and transportation to medical appointments
  • Education about the warning signs of breast cancer, methods of early detection and the latest treatment options
  • Cutting-edge research to find a cure for breast cancer

**The 20th Annual Race for the Cure will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012.**
